Barbie is a 2023 American fantasy comedy film directed by Greta Gerwig from a screenplay she wrote with Noah Baumbach.[3] Based on the Barbie fashion dolls by Mattel, it is the first live-action Barbie film after numerous computer-animated direct-to-video and streaming television films. The film stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, who go on a journey of self-discovery after their expulsion from Barbieland, alongside a large ensemble cast that includes America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Ariana Greenblatt, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, Helen Mirren, and Will Ferrell.
A live-action Barbie film was first announced in September 2009 by Universal Pictures with Laurence Mark producing, but development began in April 2014, when Sony Pictures acquired the film rights to the character. Following multiple writer and director changes and the casting of Amy Schumer and later Anne Hathaway in the titular role, Sony lost the rights, which were transferred to Warner Bros. Pictures in October 2018, with Robbie being cast in 2019. Gerwig was announced as director and co-writer with Baumbach in 2021. Gosling and the rest of the cast were announced in early 2022. Filming took place primarily at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden in England and on the Venice Beach Skatepark in Los Angeles, California from March to July 2022.
Barbie premiered at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on July 9, 2023, and is scheduled to be released theatrically in the United States on July 21, 2023, by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film received largely positive reviews, with particular praise aimed at its production values, Gerwig's direction, soundtrack, and cast performances (particularly those of Robbie and Gosling).
On the way to Los Angeles, Stereotypical Barbie is joined by Stereotypical Ken, who has an unrequited crush on her. Arriving at Venice Beach through a portal, the pair cause multiple antics in the area, alarming the Mattel CEO, who orders their capture. Stereotypical Barbie tracks down her owner, a tween girl named Sasha. She and Ken find Sasha at a nearby school with her friends, who heavily mock Barbie, before learning that Sasha's mother Gloria, a Mattel employee, is the catalyst of her existential crisis. Gloria began playing with Sasha's Barbie toys while experiencing her own crisis, inadvertently transferring her concerns to Stereotypical Barbie. Stereotypical Barbie is almost caught by Mattel's CEO and his subordinates, but Gloria and Sasha rescue her before travelling together to Barbieland.
Meanwhile, Stereotypical Ken learns about the American patriarchal system and is indoctrinated by it. Returning to Barbieland, he easily persuades the other Kens into establishing their reign. The Barbies are rapidly subjugated into submissive roles as maids, housewives, and agreeable girlfriends. This oppressive scenario leads to Stereotypical Barbie becoming depressed. With the encouragement of Sasha, Gloria, Weird Barbie, Allan, and other abandoned toy lines, the Barbies retaliate against the Kens, leading the Kens to wage war against themselves on the Barbieland beach.
After a truce, the Barbies quickly regain their systemic power, and both Stereotypical Barbie and Ken apologize to one another. She understands her ineptness to his courting made him rebel and advises Ken to foster an autonomous identity. Stereotypical Barbie, who faces another calamity over her future role, meets once more with Mattel's CEO before Ruth Handler's intervention. Ruth explains that although Barbie was modelled after aspirational beauty standards, her ever-evolving history surpasses that of her roots. Moved by this, Stereotypical Barbie asks Ruth to turn her into a human before returning to the real world, a request which Ruth affirms she already embodies. Some time later, Gloria, her husband and Sasha take Stereotypical Barbie, now going by the name "Barbara Handler", to a gynecologist for her first appointment.

A flood-like situation again looms over Delhi, the water level of Yamuna river in the national capital yet again breached the danger mark of 205.33 metres with the peak level at 205.9m at 8am in Delhi Railway Bridge on Sunday, according to the Central Water Commission.
The update also warned that it is expected for the river to breach 206.7 metres — the level at which people are evacuated from low-lying neighbourhoods close to the river — by 4pm on Sunday. “Thereafter water level will likely to remain steady,” stated the CWC.

Till 10pm on Saturday, the river’s peak level was at 205.02 metres, just shy of the danger mark of 205.33 metres. The water released from the Hathnikund barrage in Haryana reached the national capital roughly 36 hours later.
Meanwhile, the Delhi government has been on high alert due to the discharge of over 2 lakh cusecs of water from the barrage. "The situation has sparked concern, prompting the government to take proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents," Delhi revenue minister Atishi said.
To tackle the situation, the authorities have ensured adequate preparations in the central district, eastern district, or areas like Yamuna Bazar and Yamuna Khadar, the minister further said.
Officials on Saturday warned that the Yamuna water level in Delhi is likely to impact relief and rehabilitation work in the flood-affected low-lying areas of the capital.

Meanwhile, the water level in the Hindon river in Uttar Pradesh's Noida rose on Saturday, submerging the nearby houses. The police reached the spot and issued an alert regarding the situation.
"From Chhijarsi to Ecotech, water entered the houses in three low-lying areas. Poeple were evacuated from the houses. However, the river has not crossed the danger mark anywhere yet", said Suresh Rao A Kulkarni, additional police commissioner.
Meanwhile, in Ghaziabad, at least 1,000 people were evacuated since Friday evening after the Hindon river’s flow increased by 10,575 cusecs in the last 48 hours and flooded upstream areas near Raj Nagar Extension, officials aware of the matter said on Saturday.
The authorities also began fanning out to localities close to the river after states upstream including Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand received heavy rainfall, bringing back the threat of floods that threw life out of gear a little over a week ago. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rain in parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand till July 25.
P Chidambaram hit out at the government for comparing incidents of violence against women in Bihar, Bengal and Rajasthan with those in Manipur.
Congress veteran P Chidambaram on Sunday even if it is admitted that there have been “incidents of violence against women in Bihar, West Bengal and Rajasthan”, they can't be compared with the “relentless violence in Manipur”.
Chidambaram's long tweet against the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government comes a day after Union minister Anurag Thakur alleged that there was a long list of heinous crimes against women in states ruled by opposition parties such as Rajasthan, West Bengal and Bihar, but they were playing politics over the Manipur incident.
Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, Thakur slammed former Congress presidents Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and the leaders of other opposition parties, accusing them of remaining silent on cases of crimes against women in non-BJP ruled states. "Over one lakh cases of crimes against women have been registered in Rajasthan in the last four years. A total of 33,000 cases pertaining to sexual assault on women in Rajasthan," Thakur alleged.
But taking to Twitter, Chidambaram asked, "How can the situation in Manipur be compared to the situation in Bihar, West Bengal and Rajasthan?
“Let's admit that there were incidents of violence against women in Bihar, West Bengal and Rajasthan. How does that excuse the continuing and relentless violence in Manipur? Are there any Kukis left in the valley? Are there any Meiteis left in Churachandpur and other hill districts of Manipur?” the Congress MP tweeted.
Chidambaram added that if reports are true, “ethnic cleansing is almost complete in Manipur”.
“On an objective assessment, there is a collapse of Constitutional government in Manipur The writ of the chief minister and his ministers does not run beyond their homes and offices… The central government has not only been incompetent and partisan, it is callous and cruel when it hides behind the smokescreen of odious comparisons. If stern action is required in Bihar, West Bengal and Rajasthan, certainly instruct the state governments to take stronger action, but that does not excuse the barbarism that is taking place in Manipur. The Government of Manipur has collapsed. The Government of India is in a self-induced coma,” he further said.
Union ministers Smriti Irani and Thakur also hit out at the Congress for sacking its minister in Rajasthan after he raised the issue of crime against women in his state. Thakur alleged that it has been done on the instructions of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.
Opposition attacks government over Manipur viral video
The Opposition has mounted a fresh attack on the government after a May 4 incident video surfaced on Wednesday showing two women from one of the warring communities in Manipur being paraded naked and assaulted by a group of men from the other side. Five people have been arrested so far involving the incident.
The Congress accused the BJP of resorting to whataboutery and running away from discussion in parliament like "fugitives".
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said on Twitter, "The Prime Minister and his drum beaters are diverting and deflecting from the enormous tragedy that has overtaken all of Manipur in the past 80 days by creating false equivalence with an issue relating to Rajasthan."
The Congress also put up a picture of Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani on its Twitter account with a "Failed report card".
Irani hit back on Twitter, saying, "There are depths of depravity very few are capable of - keeping a scorecard regarding women."
"There are instances of wilful ignorance very few incessantly exhibit. On both counts - depravity and wilful ignorance- CONgress scores well. Discuss in Parliament if the dynasty permits," she said.
Hitting back at Irani, Congress' Pawan Khera alleged that when "she is questioned over her failures as a minister, she chooses to hide behind the gender argument."
TMC's Mahua Moitra said, "Sorry WCD Minister. This isn't Depravity. Depravity is BJP deflecting Manipur issue with all-out fake news assault in other states."
Congress leader Ranjeet Ranjan said, "WCD minister Smriti Irani is shrugging off responsibility over Manipur horror."
"This is a government which behaves like a fugitive as it is afraid of the opposition," she asked.
India will draw confidence from the fact that they have already beaten Pakistan in the league stage.
India A will be keen to assert their dominance in the Emerging Asia Cup tournament when they face Pakistan A in a potentially high-voltage summit clash here on Sunday.
Generally, it is tough to pick a favourite in the matches between India and Pakistan, but in this instance, the former stands out as the clear front-runner.
India will also draw confidence from the fact that they have already beaten Pakistan in the league stage.
This crop of young Indian players carries a lot of flair in their approach, but beneath the flashiness bubbles a layer of stone-cold determination to win from any situation.
The semifinal against Bangladesh was a microcosm of that trait. India were bundled out for 211, a below-par total even on a sluggish R Premadasa Stadium pitch.
The Bangladesh openers, who were in good touch in this tournament, started briskly scoring over 6 runs an over. They raced to 94 for 1 in the 18th over, and looked poised for a smooth win.
But the Indian spinners -- Nishant Sindhu and Manav Suthar -- owned the stage from thereafter, rolling over Bangladesh for 160. The captaincy of Yash Dhull, who also made a crucial 66, and the fielding too were spot on as India snatched a win that looked improbable at one stage.
This cohesion within the team will be India’s primary weapon going into the final against Pakistan.
Having said that, underestimating Pakistan will be naïve. They are a talented side, and many of their players have considerable international and Pakistan Super League (PSL) experience behind them.
All-rounder Mohammad Wasim, captain Mohammad Harris, opener Sahibzada Farhan and pacer Arshad Iqbal all have tasted international cricket. While players such as Amad Butt and Omair Yousuf have been proven performers in the PSL.
Hence, Pakistan would like to treat the setback in the league phase as a mere aberration and would be eager for an act of atonement.
But, India will believe that they have all the cards to nullify Pakistan’s charge.
